From OPP Association Branch 13 “Please share far & wide, the spouse of one of our members needs our help”.
A few of Jason Koehler’s co-workers wanted to create a Go Fund Me in the memory of Gillian Koheler. Gillian bravely fought but lost her battle with cancer. The devastating loss of Gillian has struck many but none more than their children – Sydney & Jack.
Sydney returns to Nipissing University in the fall & Jack will be entering High School. We are hoping that this fundraiser will help to cover some of the costs associated with post secondary education for Jack & Sydney.
ALL funds will go towards their education.
Thank You! ❤

POLICE INVESTIGATING FATAL COLLISION IN NORTH-WEST
Posted on Monday June 7, 2021
UPDATE # 2 – LONDON, ON (June 7, 2021) – On Sunday, June 6, 2021, at approximately 8:40 p.m., a vehicle struck five citizens as they walked along the west side of Hyde Park Road, where it meets South Carriage Road. A black pickup truck, occupied by a lone male travelling southbound on Hyde Park Road, mounted the curb and struck the five victims waiting to cross the intersection. The pickup truck continued to travel southbound on Hyde Park Road at a high rate of speed. It was observed to turn left on Oxford Street, not stopping for the red light. Several 9-1-1 calls were received and emergency crews quickly attended the scene, and commenced life-saving efforts.
At approximately 8:45 p.m., the lone occupant of the vehicle stopped in the parking lot of a mall located at Oxford Street West and Cherryhill Boulevard, a distance of approximately seven (7) km away from the scene. Police attended this location and placed the driver under arrest.
The victims were all members of the same family. The deceased include a 74-year-old female, a 46-year-old male, a 44-year-old female, and a 15-year-old female. One 9-year-old male remains in hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
As a result of the investigation, Nathaniel Veltman, 20, of London, has been charged with four counts of first degree murder and one count of attempt murder. He appeared in London court today in relation to the charges.
Family members of the victims have requested that the names of the victims not be released at this time. The post-mortems are scheduled to occur tomorrow at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto.
Investigators believe that this was an intentional act and that the victims were targeted because of their Islamic faith. There is evidence that this was a planned, premeditated act, motivated by hate.
There is no known previous connection between the suspect and the victims.
The scene of the collision has reopened to the public.
We would like to offer sincere condolences on behalf of the London Police Service to the family, friends and loved ones of the victims of this tragedy. Our thoughts remain with the young boy still in hospital.
A tip line has been set up – 519 661-5515 ext 5842. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call in. The Crime Stoppers phone number 1-800-222-TIPS is also available for people to call anonymously.

Award: Community Role Model (Provincial Constable Jennifer Landry-awarded posthumously)
Service: Ontario Provincial Police
Year: 2021
Ontario Provincial Police Constable Jennifer Landry, of the Temiskaming Detachment, was an Indigenous woman and a member of the Matachewan First Nation. As a former constable of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS), she was involved extensively in the communities she policed as an officer and citizen. She treated everyone she encountered with respect and dignity including those that she arrested. She was an advocate for violence against women, children and other marginalized and vulnerable citizens. Please note that on October 14, 2020, Cst. Jennifer Landry died tragically while off-duty, leaving behind her 8-year old daughter and her family.
Jenn was highly respected among her peers and throughout her career, sat on various committees in Kirkland Lake and Temiskaming Shores. Jenn was a role model and provided many hours of volunteer work for various Indigenous organizations in the District of Temiskaming.
Jennifer served as President on the Board of Directors for the Temiskaming Native Women’s Support Group for many terms. She sat with the Ontario Native Women’s Association and the Native Women’s Association of Canada representing our District. Jenn recognized the impacts of childhood trauma, inter-generational trauma and violence on individuals in the communities she served. Jenn was able to support her Elders and teach the Youth through encouragement and support. Her various acts of kindness included giving an elderly male suffering from mental health and addiction issues money to purchase food and coffee while he waited for his family to pick him up. Not only did she actively support victims, she was very impactful with her colleagues. She consistently provided support and assistance to her co-workers who had been experiencing difficulties with personal/professional issues and occupational stress injuries.
Jennfier went over and above the regular duties of a police officer. Her kindness led her to become a strong leader within the community. Jenn had a great impact on those she worked with and those communities she served. She was a Police Hero that always took the extra steps to help people in all of the communities she served including James Bay Coast, Cochrane, Kirkland Lake and Englehart.

On March 10, 2020, Sgt. Steven Large with the Ontario Provincial Police utilized quick thinking to rescue a fisherman who had fallen through the ice into the St. Lawrence River off Landon Bay while ice fishing. Sgt. Large risked his own life by undertaking a precarious water rescue using an available canoe on shore and sliding it across the ice to the fisherman in distress. Officer Large wasn’t worried about his safety, rather, just saving this individual and doing his duty.
Exactly one year to the day, this rescued individual was happy to tell Sergeant Large that he was back out ice fishing “all thanks to him.” This would be the second time in his career that Sgt. Large subjected himself to freezing water conditions in order to save a life, which is certainly above and beyond the call of duty.
Also announced at the PAO AGM were the Harry DeJong Awards for Police Association Service. Congratulations to OPP Association Director Jason Cull from Thunder Bay on receiving recognition for 15 years of service to the Ontario Provincial Police Association and to OPP Association Vice President John Cerasuolo from Sault Ste Marie for 20 years of Association service.

The OPP Association will be flying the Pride flag for the month of June in support of all people in the 2SLGBTQ+ community. We support an optimized work environment including diversity, integrity, awareness and equity of 2SLGBTQ+ employees where there are no barriers, stereotypes or bias. We are sensitive to the unique needs of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and are committed to building bridges for all members of the community.
Education and awareness is integral for moving forward in unity and respectfully. We take this opportunity, on the occasion of the launch of Pride Month 2021, to share two important Canadian law enforcement resources to help us all respect and better understand our colleagues, friends and families who are a part of our 2SLGBTQ+ community.
The President and Board of Directors of the Ontario Provincial Police Association wish everyone Happy Pride.
Rob Stinson, President and CEO, and the Board of Directors
Ontario Provincial Police Association
In June, the OPP Association joins people across the country as we celebrate the history, heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada.
This year it is important that we acknowledge the grief of our Indigenous communities with the devastating news of the remains of 215 children being found in Kamloops, BC. The lasting and harmful effects of residential schools is a reality for many of our members and the community at large. The flags at the OPP Association have been lowered for the next nine days, one hour for each of the 215 children.
The OPP Association recognizes the importance and sacred nature of cultural ceremonies and celebrations that usually occur during this time. We have been honoured in the past to participate in many of these events, and look forward to being able to safely gather once again to celebrate our history and diversity when the current pandemic safety guidelines permit.
We look forward to sharing traditions online and in new ways to keep us together and connected for this year’s celebrations.

We acknowledge the grief felt by family and friends of Regis Korchinski-Paquet as a result of her tragic death.
