The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) may reimburse you for mileage and other reasonable travel expenses related to medical appointments—provided the travel is necessary and directly connected to a workplace injury or illness.
Members who did not previously submit a claim may be eligible to claim travel expenses retroactively. To do so, they must provide the dates of treatment and a detailed record of the expenses incurred on the appropriate form.
Reimbursement is typically available when public transit is not accessible or cannot be used due to medical limitations. It’s important to obtain pre-approval from WSIB before incurring these expenses. To receive reimbursement, you must complete and submit a Worker Travel Expense Form.
When WSIB Pays for Travel Expenses:
• Necessary and related treatment: Travel expenses are covered when the appointment or service is necessary and directly related to your work-related injury or illness.
• Mileage for no public transit: If there is no public transit available in your area, or if medical evidence shows you cannot use it due to your injury, WSIB will pay for mileage and parking.
• WSIB-approved healthcare providers: You may need to travel to a WSIB-approved healthcare provider for assessments to determine your level of impairment.
• Pre-approval: It is crucial to get pre-approval from WSIB for out-of-town travel and other forms of travel beyond public transit, such as taxis.
How to Get Reimbursed:
• Use the Worker Travel Expense Form: Complete the form to claim mileage and other travel expenses.
• Confirm attendance: You should take a travel form to your appointment and have the treating agency or doctor sign or stamp it to confirm your attendance.
• Submit the form: Submit the completed form to WSIB to be reimbursed for your expenses.
