The Ontario government announced significant new measures to strengthen our province’s bail system.

Effective August 17, 2026, the Ontario government will:

Require a cash security deposit in the full amount pledged, payable within two business days of release, ensuring immediate and meaningful financial consequences for breaches.

Require sureties to provide current contact and identification details, with failure to comply potentially resulting in a provincial offence charge.

Enhance collection tools for bail debts, including wage and bank account garnishment, property liens, and seizure and sale of property, to make court-ordered bail obligations enforceable.

Strengthen digital tools to track repeat offenders and those who breach their bail conditions, including a new surety database to enhance checks and compliance.
